Superintendent Search Timeline and Process
In January, the Multnomah Education Service District Board began its search for the next superintendent of MESD. Speaking to what the Board was looking for in the next superintendent, Board Chair Kristin Cornuelle said, "We are looking for an individual who wants to serve our students and districts during these unprecedented times and come make a difference with us. We are looking for a regional leader who will continue to place equity at the center of all that we do, someone who shares our mission to support all students in achieving excellence, and someone who shares our values of providing a collaborative and supportive learning environment for students, families and employees."
Timeline and Process Overview
During the March Board meeting, Board Chair Cornuelle reiterated that representatives from staff, students, families, community partners and component districts would be invited to participate in the process. On April 6, the Board shared additional details about the interview and hiring timeline and process:
Applicant screening occurs in April.
Panel interviews will begin in late-April. The purpose of the panel interviews is to evaluate each candidate and make a recommendation to the Board about whether to move the candidate forward in the interview process. Panel 1, the labor and employee panel, will consist of a variety of staff positions including classified, licensed, and supervisor staff members. Leadership from the employee associations has been invited to select and appoint representatives to the employee panel. Panel 2, the community panel, will consist of students, family members, and community partners that serve our students and families. Program supervisors have been asked to approach and support students and family members to participate in this panel. Panel 3, the administration panel, will consist of members of the administration team from MESD. Panel 4, the component district panel, will consist of superintendents of each component district MESD serves or their designees.
Determining the Finalists
In late April, the Board will review the evaluations of the panel interviews and determine the finalist or finalists.
Get to Know MESD Events
In early May, the agency will host the finalist(s) at Get to Know MESD events. These events are designed to allow the finalists to learn more about the agency’s programs and services, students and staff. The events are not evaluative for the agency. Employees, students and families attending these events will not be asked for feedback on the finalists.
The Board will host the finalists for interviews in early May. Interviews will be held as part of a special meeting of the Board in early-May. Following the interviews, the Board will discuss the candidates and direct the agency administration to enter into negotiations to hire the next superintendent.

In early May, once negotiations have been concluded, the Board will announce the hiring of the next superintendent.
