Doernbecher Intermediate Care Unit
The Hospital School Program located on the Intermediate Care Unit works with students who are medically fragile and are in the hospital for nephrology (kidney), neurology, and neurosurgery services. On this unit educational services are almost exclusively provided at bedside. For students who are able to leave the unit, they may attend one of our classrooms.
Once per month we offer Songs, Stories, and Science where we share folk stories, sing songs and teach an interactive science lesson. We are also fortunate to have community partners such as OMSI, Master Gardeners, and the Children’s Cancer Association who work with our students to bring rich, engaging activities that all our students enjoy.
The priority for the students is to continue their education and keep them connected with their home school. With parent permission, we will collaborate with teachers to coordinate school work. Students can receive credit in their local schools for work completed in our program. We often function as a resource as well, providing information to families and schools if they would like assistance with educational planning.
