Shriners Hospitals for Children

Welcome to the Shriners Hospital School Program. Our classroom is located on the third floor of Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Oregon and provides small group and individualized instruction to K-12 hospitalized students and their siblings.
Our hospital serves children with orthopedic needs, therefore common diagnoses of our students include scoliosis, cerebral palsy, neurofibromatosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and spina bifida. Our long-term inpatient students tend to be in the hospital for halo traction, wound VAC treatment, and physical rehabilitation after cast removal. Our long-term outpatient students often come for orthotic / prosthetic adjustments and cast changes. We welcome outpatients from clinics and day surgery and focus especially on patients who are here five days or longer. Our inpatient unit has 29 beds.
We partner with students’ local schools both in and out of Oregon to facilitate the continuation of assignments with the goal that patients will return to school with as little educational lapse as possible. The classroom accommodates patient beds, and staff provide instruction at bedside for patients in isolation.
The MESD education staff can implement IEP goals for students with special needs. We also help facilitate home-tutoring through the local schools after hospitalization for students who must stay at home to heal before returning to school.
The hospital classroom is a place where students not only complete schoolwork but also have the opportunity to connect and develop friendships with each other. We also offer computers and iPads with internet access for student use, motivating educationally related activities, art projects, and thinking games.

Meet the Shriners Hospitals for Children Staff
Mayra Tellez
Educational Assistant Shriners Hospitals for Children mtellez@mesd.k12.or.us I’m from Mexico but raised in Portland since an infant. I worked with prenatal moms and children 0-3 years old for 9 years and I loved it. I was looking for a new change but with the same vision of still making a difference by helping others. I wanted to find an environment that has rich diversity among its staff and its students. I want to be able to do what I do for my children, for other students as well. My biggest motivation to working with school aged students has been my youngest son who is on the spectrum. I am so excited to be a part of an amazing team with MESD Hospital Program. I am so happy to be here and this has only motivated me to further my education. My three boys mean the world to me and I will do what it takes to advocate for them and I want give a piece of me to others. |

Eric Prasoloff
Hospital Teacher Shriners Hospitals for Children eprasolo@mesd.k12.or.us Ph: 971-544-3307 Eric is a home grown Oregonian and a son of refugees. As hard as Eric tried to break the mold, he followed in his mother's footsteps and became a teacher (he doesn't regret it). He volunteered during summers in college helping children with vision impairment develop orientation and mobility skills on community excursions, which led him down the path of special education--first as a Clackamas Education Service District SPED assistant, then as a West Linn-Wilsonville School District elementary SPED teacher. Eric is currently finishing his 16th year as a hospital teacher with the MESD. He loves experiencing the diversity that comes with instructing students K-12 in general and special education. Eric has a BA in Sociology from Occidental College and a MS in Special Education from Portland State University where he received his teaching license. He enjoys the outdoors through gardening, hiking, biking, sailing, camping, paddle boarding, and visiting national parks. And there is always one more audiobook or podcast to listen to. |
