Unity Center for Behavioral Health
The Hospital School Program at Unity Center for Behavioral Health partners with patients and their families to stay connected to their schoolwork and to assist in a smooth transition back to school after discharge. The program has a relaxed environment where a majority of students feel comfortable and are engaged making progress on their school issues. The program has one teacher and one educational assistant working a year-round school year, serving approximately 700 students per year.

Meet the Unity Center for Behavioral Health Staff
Jane Albertson
Hospital Teacher Unity Center for Behavioral Health jalbertson@mesd.k12.or.us Ph: 503-944-7625 I grew up on Vashon Island (between Tacoma and Seattle in the Puget Sound). I have lived in Portland for the last 15 years, and I definitely consider Portland my home. I have an almost 3 year old and spending time with him is my favorite pastime. I really enjoy spending time outdoors, especially hiking in the forest with my family. I absolutely LOVE working in the hospital school program. In fact, I pursued my teaching degree specifically so that I could work as a teacher in the hospital school program and was blessed to get a job with HSP right after I completed my graduate program in 2016. One of my favorite things about working in the hospital school program is of course having the opportunity to work with the coolest, strongest, bravest (the list goes on) students and their incredible families. I love working with students, their families, and their home school teams to find creative solutions for making school a place where students feel like they are valued and they can do well. |
Ben White
Hospital Teacher Unity Center for Behavioral Health bwhite@mesd.k12.or.us Ph: 503-944-7626 Benjamin is one of the SpEd Teachers in the Hospital School Program on the Adolescent Psychiatry Unit at the Unity Center for Behavioral Health. With 25 years of experience working with diverse teen groups, Benjamin leads a culturally relevant program that partners with hospitalized teens in psychiatric crisis and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support their transition back to school. Benjamin and his team actively blend expertise in Trauma-Informed Care & Collaborative Problem Solving with instructional technique, therapeutic goals and a lil' bit of clowning around in order to meet patients where they're at, build critical connection and explore how school can work for them. The program aims to keep brains engaged while emerging from a mental health crisis and, more importantly, help patients and their school teams explore how to best support a restorative re-entry to school. As a result, he and his team have built better communication with hundreds of school counselors across Oregon and Southwest Washington, helping thousands of patients return to school more understood, appreciated and supported. Benjamin also loves aerating his lawn, spicy pastor burritos, the Portland Timbers Football Club and loud music! |
